This small but valuable observatory was built in 1904 by the astronomer and university professor Egon von Oppolzer planed and financed with his own resources. In 1909 the Austrian government purchased the observatory from the Oppolzer family and it thus became part of the University of Innsbruck. The observatory together with its original equipment is now an important representative of Austrian scientific history.
